Nigel Farage has called for a referendum on the reintroduction of the death penalty, while voicing his personal opposition to capital punishment.

The Ukip leader declared: “I have my reservations about the state having the power to end someone’s life [but]...Ukip believes in direct democracy: that is, letting the people decide.” In the same column in The Independent, he said he stood a “good chance of winning” the South Thanet parliamentary seat next year.
