Donald Trump cancelled London visit over 'personal slights'

The announcement comes after reports that the US President was set to snub Mrs May at the summit.

Likely topics of discussion at the summit are the Syrian civil war and the threat posed by North Korea.

Mr Trump had been set to visit London to cut the ribbon on the new US Embassy building in South London, but ditched plans for a visit, ostensibly in protest at Barack Obama selling the previous site for “peanuts”.

Mass protests were expected in the event of a visit by the President, with London Mayor Sadiq Khan saying that Trump represented the “polar opposite” of the capital’s inclusive values.

Mr Trump received heavy criticism in the Britain, including from the UK’s ambassador to Washington, after retweeting a series of videos posted by far-right group Britain First in November.

The outspoken President lashed out at the Prime Minister over Twitter, calling on Mrs May to “focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom.”
