EHRC response to government plans to relax immigration rules

Equality and Human Rights Commission

Please see below a statement from the Equality and Human Rights Commission on government's plans to relax immigration rules allowing more non-EU skilled workers into the UK.

The EHRC are calling on the government to ensure mental health professionals, particularly child and adolescent psychiatrists, are added to the list of those eligible to apply.

Rebecca Hilsenrath, Chief Executive of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said: “The government’s proposal to lift visa restrictions for the NHS is a positive move but it is essential that it applies to both mental and physical health specialists. Mental and physical health needs must be treated with equal importance to ensure that everyone has access to good quality healthcare. We would urge the government to add child and adolescent psychiatrists to the list of those able to apply under the tier 2 visa immigration system to address the current shortage of staffing in child mental health services across England.”
