Any extra funding made available for the NHS should go into social care instead, the Chief Executive of NHS England has said.

Simon Stevens said: “I do not believe that it would be prudent for us to assume any additional NHS funding over the next several years, not least because I think there is a strong argument that, were extra funding to be available, frankly we should be arguing that it should be going to social care.”

Speaking yesterday at an NHS Confederation conference in Manchester yesterday he added that he expected the next few years to be “bloody tough” for the health service and had told managers not expect more money.
