Chief Executive of the disability charity Scope,Richard Hawkessaid:

“Ahead of the next leaders’ debate, 11 million disabled people in the UK are asking whether any party will protect disability payments.

“Experts say it will be difficult to find significant savings from the welfare budget without looking at payments such as Disability Living Allowance and Personal Independent Payments. Last week’s leaked documents appear to confirm that.

“Life costs more if you’re disabled. From incontinence pads, to higher fuel bills or specialist equipment – research shows that this adds up to on average £550 per month.

“DLA/PIP is the financial lifeline that disabled people rely on to help cover those extra costs. Leaders of all parties must commit to protecting the value of these payments and make sure those who face the greatest extra costs get support. Twenty years since the Disability Discrimination Act anything else will be a huge step backwards.”
