Prisons inspector backs migrant detention time limit
The Chief Inspector of Prisons has joined calls for a time limit to be placed on immigration detentions.
an interview with The Times, Nick Hardwick said an independent decision should be taken within weeks of people being detained on whether they should continue to be held.
“I don’t think people should be detained indefinitely without oversight,” he said.
Mr Hardwick added that depriving somebody of their liberty was “not to be done lightly and there should be proper safeguards to it”.
Last week, the APPG on immigration called for a 28-day time limit to be imposed.
