The number of migrants from Romania and Bulgaria registering for work in the UK has increased nearly sevenfold, according to official figures.

187,370 Romanians and Bulgarians were allocated National Insurance numbers in 2014 following the lifting of transitional controls on arrivals from the two countries, up from 27,700 over the previous year when restrictions were still in place.

Home Affairs Committee chair Keith Vaz said the "huge" rise was due to migrants who had been working on the black market coming "out of the shadows" to register for legal work after controls were lifted on 1 January 2014.
