College of Policing response to the Crime Survey of England and Wales statistical bulletin

College lead for crime and criminal justice, David Tucker, has responded to the Crime Survey of England and Wales statistical bulletin which was published earlier today.

“The annual crime statistics provide an overview of the nature and scale of crime experienced by the public. For the first time, digital crimes for the full year are included and it is unsurprising that their inclusion has significantly increased the number of incidents of crime covered by the survey. Digital crimes can be complex to investigate and require technical skills. Criminals can use online approaches to target the most vulnerable in society, seeking to abuse and defraud those who are least able to protect themselves. The College of Policing has developed cybercrime training and guidance to support our members in their work to protect the public from these types of crime.

“We are pleased to note that, once digital crime is discounted, recorded crime is on similar levels to previous years. We carried out a great deal of work to support improvements in crime recording – including training force crime registrars who are working in all forces in England and Wales.

“It is, however, of concern that there have been some real rises in lower volume but higher harm violent crimes. The College has focused activities on supporting our members to respond to these types of crime.

“It was recently announced that the College had been awarded funding to lead work on transforming the police service’s approach to vulnerability. This work will lead to development of a range of products aimed at improving police responses to the needs of vulnerable people.”
