Equal outcomes to wage councils - Owen Smith's policy run-down

A run-down of the raft of policies set out by Owen Smith in his speech at Orgreave this morning. 

New policies

  • Making the UK a country “where outcomes can be equal, not just the opportunities we create”
  • ‘British New Deal’, with £200bn of investment over five years, including “massive investment” in the North of England
  • Wealth Tax on investment earnings by the top 1%
  • Introducing wage councils for hotel and shop workers
  • Extending the right to information and consultation to cover all workplaces with more than 50 employees
  • Increase spending on the NHS by 4% in real-terms in every year of the next parliament
  • Bring forward HS3
  • Re-open libraries and reduce school class sizes

Policies already advocated by Jeremy Corbyn

  • Ban zero hours contracts
  • Re-instate the 50p top rate of income tax
  • Create a new Ministry of Labour

Policies already advocated by Theresa May and Ed Miliband

  • Workers’ representation on remuneration committees

Reversing Tory policies

  • End the public sector pay freeze
  • Reverse cuts to inheritance tax, corporation tax and capital gains tax from the Summer Budget
