At a rally in London last night, large parts of the 4,000-strong audience started jeering when Claudia Webbe, a member of the National Executive Committee backed by Momentum, mentioned Mr Khan’s name.

“Despite what Sadiq Khan says,” she said as people started booing, “we won London under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.”

Mr Corbyn later addressed the crowds in Kilburn, the night before ballot papers for the leadership election were sent out.

The Labour leader’s team had earlier hit back at Mr Khan’s claims that Mr Corbyn was “extremely unlikely” to lead the party to a general election victory.

A spokesperson for Mr Corbyn said: “Sadiq Khan is entitled to his opinion. But he won the London mayoralty, as others have pointed out, by standing on a Labour platform under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, backed by the huge numbers who have joined our party to support Jeremy and now campaign for Labour.”
