The pro-Jeremy Corbyn campaign group has written to its thousands of followers urging them to take part in the crunch general secretary election.

Mr McCluskey - a close ally of the Labour leader - quit as head of the union last month in order to trigger the election, which will take place next spring.

He will face a challenge from Gerard Coyne, Unite's regional secretary in the West Midlands, as well as left-wing outsider Ian Allinson.

In an email to its members, Momentum drew parallels with this year's Labour leadership election, in which Mr Corbyn received the overwhelming backing of the party's members.

It says: "During the summer, Unite the Union - led by Len McCluskey - threw its support behind Jeremy Corbyn's leadership campaign.

"Together, we all helped Jeremy get re-elected as Labour leader with an even bigger mandate. Now, Len McCluskey needs our support."

The email then provides a link for members to follow in order to join the union.

One Labour insider told PoliticsHome: "I doubt anyone will sign up. This isn't as glamorous as saving Jeremy and everyone's out having fun at Christmas."

A Momentum spokeswoman said: "Both Unite and Momentum worked hard this summer to re-elect Jeremy with an even bigger mandate. Len McCluskey's re-election is important to the continued success of our movement."
