Former Coronation Street and Eastenders actress Tracy Brabin last night secured the Labour nomination to stand in the West Yorkshire seat of Batley and Spen.

The contest was triggered after the MP Jo Cox was killed during the EU referendum campaign in June.

Ms Brabin was selected over the other candidate, Jane Thomas, who previously stood as a parliamentary candidate in Keighley

Speaking at the hustings Ms Brabin said: "Jo was my inspiration. I intend to do her proud.

"Obviously no-one wanted this, but I'm the only person on the ballot paper that can stand up for everyone in Batley and Spen.

"I'm hoping people will put party politics to one side and we can work together."

The main political parties have announced that they will not contest the seat as mark of respect, however it is expected the English Democrats and Liberty GB will field candidates.

The by-election is set to take place on 20 October.
