A parliamentary watchdog has launched an investgation into Ian Paisley Jr over two all expenses paid holidays to Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan government reportedly covered the £100,000 cost for the DUP MP, his wife and four children to visit the country.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the family flew business class, stayed in luxury hotels and were chauffeured around the country during their stays.

Mr Paisley is denying the allegations, saying the reports are "devoid of fact or logic" and are "defamatory".

He then referred himself to Kathryn Hudson, the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, who confirmed yesterday that a formal allegation is now under way.

Mr Paisley is being investigated for an "alleged breach of paragraph 13 of the Code of Conduct", she said.

Paragraph 13 reads: "Members shall fulfil conscientiously the requirements of the House in respect of the registration of interests in the Register of Members' Financial Interests.

"They shall always be open and frank in drawing attention to any relevant interest in any proceeding of the House or its committees, and in any communications with ministers, members, public officials or public office holders."
