Conservatives enjoy 17-point lead over Labour as Boris Johnson exceeds expectations, new poll finds

2 min read

The Tories have a 17-point lead over Labour as Boris Johnson exceeds voters' expectations in Number 10, according to a new poll.

The Opinium survey puts the Conservatives on 47%, compared to 30% for Labour. Support for the the Lib Dems, meanwhile, is at just 9%.

At the general election last month, the Tories received around 43% of the vote, compared to Labour's 32%.

The poll also found that Mr Johnson is out-performing expectations as Prime Minister,  with 42% of voters saying he was doing better than predicted.

However, a third of people still felt the PM was doing badly, or worse, than they had expected.

Adam Drummond, head of political polling at Opinium, said: “Voting intention with nearly five years to go before another general election isn’t the most predictive exercise but the takeaway from these results are that Boris Johnson has yet to do anything to annoy the diverse coalition that gave the Conservatives such a substantial majority in December.

“The key factors will be whether or not they are able to deliver a benefit to those traditional Labour voters who backed the Conservatives for the first time in 2019 and whether Labour’s next leader is able to capitalise on any mistakes.”

This latest poll comes as the campaign to replace Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader continues, with a series of trade unions set to announce who they are backing this week.

Boris Johnson meanwhile is mulling a major Cabinet reshuffle next month, and has warned ministers to keep focus or face the sack.
