Conservative HQ reveals 15.7% gender pay gap - in favour of women

2 min read

Female staff at Tory HQ are paid more than their male colleagues on average, it has been revealed.

Figures released by the party show that the gender pay gap in the organisation is 15.7% in favour of women.

The party pledged to release the data on a voluntary basis after the Government forced firms with more than 250 employees to publish their pay gap figures.

The figures cover all staff working at Conservative Campaign Headquarters, but do not include staff working directly for MPs or local associations.

The pay gap figures from over 10,000 large firms show that only 14% pay women more than men - as it was revealed that on average men are paid 9.8% more.

The pay revelation follows the Prime Minister's commitment to tackle the "burning injustice" saying that the figures would make for “uncomfortable reading”.

She said: "A hundred years ago, some women first won the right to vote.

“But for all the welcome progress in the decades since, major injustices still hold too many women back.

“When I became Prime Minister, I committed myself to tackling the burning injustices which mar our society. One such is the gender pay gap.

"The difference in the median hourly wages earned by men and women in Britain currently stands at 18%.

“This is a historic low, but progress in shrinking it remains far too slow. We need to act if we are to close the gap for good within a generation."

But official figures released in December showed that a gender pay gap existed in every core Government department.

In the Department of Transport the difference was almost 17% while in the Treasury men got 33% more in bonuses than female staff.

The Department for Exiting the European Union pays men 15% more than women while in the Department of Health the difference was 14% - despite more women working at every pay grade.

The Home Office, the Foreign Office, the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Defence all have gender pay gaps of more than 10%.
