George Osborne wants Boris Johnson to replace Jeremy Hunt as Health Secretary, it was reported today.

Mr Hunt’s handling of the dispute with junior doctors, which resulted this week in the first junior doctor strike for 40 years, has left him vulnerable to being demoted, according to the Sunday Times.

The Prime Minister’s allies are said to have sounded out Mr Johnson about taking on the post later this year.

Mr Johnson’s friends, however, reportedly see the idea as “literally a hospital pass” from Mr Osborne to harm his prospects of succeeding David Cameron.

“This is wishful thinking by a leadership rival,” a source said.

A group of leading stroke doctors has attacked Mr Hunt’s claim that patients are “20% more likely to die from a stroke on the weekend”.

Writing to the Sunday Times, they say: “Misrepresentation of statistics on stroke care to justify the junior doctor contract proposals is completely inappropriate.”

A Department of Health spokesman said: “There is clear clinical evidence that standards of care are not uniform across the week. This Government makes no apology for tackling the problem.”George Osborne wants Boris Johnson to replace Jeremy Hunt as Health Secretary, it was reported this morning.
