GMB calls on Government to announce go-ahead for Heathrow 3rd runway
The Government must stop dithering and make the long awaited announcement on the future of airport capacity for the South East says GMB.
GMB, the union for workers in the aviation industry, commented on the proposal by Heathrow Hub to increase the Northern runway and split it in half which could lead to a potential saving of £2bn.
The Heathrow expansion would lead to 180,000 jobs that and 10,000 apprenticeships while also delivering £211bn in economic benefits. In addition, it will sustain 700 jobs related to the steel industry over 5 years between 2021 and 2026.
Mick Rix, GMB National Officer for Civil Aviation said "The Heathrow Hub consortium have made a valuable contribution to the conversations on the future development and expansion plans that Heathrow requires if it is to retain its prominence as a world class Airport Hub which the UK as whole needs.
In this instance it would be wise to see what the clear plans are for the airport which requires the government to stop dithering and make the long awaited announcement on the future of airport capacity for the South East."
