Theresa May and Bill Clinton to hold talks on Stormont stalemate

Emilio Casalicchio

1 min read

Theresa May will today hold a head-to-head with former US President Bill Clinton to discuss the political deadlock in Northern Ireland.

The Stormont executive collapsed in January after Sinn Fein withdrew from the power-sharing agreement over an energy scandal.

A deal to restore devolution has not been struck – with the main sticking point a disagreement over the Irish language act.

Mr Clinton was a major international champion of the Northern Irish peace process after first visiting the country in 1995.

Yesterday he met with DUP leader Arlene Foster and Sinn Fein leader Michelle O’Neill ahead of his summit in Downing Street this morning.

Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire has said the country is on a "glide path" to direct rule unless the province’s major parties reach a deal to restore devolution by the start of next month.

The Secretary of State said the chances of reaching an agreement between the unionist and nationalist parties were “not positive” after talks stalled last week following initial progress.
