Boris Johnson condemns 'reckless' North Korea after missile launched over Japan

1 min read

Boris Johnson has joined the US and Japan in strongly condemning North Korea’s latest missile test.

Pyongyang launched an intermediate-range missile over Japan’s Hokkaido island, which travelled about 2,700km before crashing into the sea.

Citizens in Hokkaido were told to take shelter when the test was identified.

Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe described the move as an “unprecedented, serious and a grave threat to our nation” and the UN Security Council is expected to meet later today to discuss its response to the latest development.

In a phone call last night, Mr Abe and US president Donald Trump said they would “increase the pressure on North Korea”.

Mr Johnson, the UK’s Foreign Secretary, said it was a “reckless provocation”.

Last night’s launch comes after heightening tensions in recent weeks between North Korea and the US and regional neighbours.

Mr Trump said Pyongyang would face “fire and fury like the world has never seen” if made threats against the US.

That led North Korea to announce it was looking at its plans to hit targets around the US Pacific territory of Guam.
