Alistair Burt: The UK has been underachieving on delivering mental health treatment

Health Minister AlistairBurt, in an interview with Tory MP Liam Fox on the BBCs Victoria Derbyshire show, said the UK has underachieved historically in delivering mental health treatment.

When asked why in some NHS hospitals less than 5% of mental health patients receive treatment within the Government’s six week target, he replied:

“I think it’s because that the money that’s being put in nationally into the service has not always flowed through the mechanisms like the CCG’s, the Commissioning groups. Now we are onto this, I think you will see a change whereby we are going to monitor Clinical Commissioning Groups much more carefully about what they’re doing in relation to mental health, because the variability in service is just not good enough.
