After being viewed as the future for many years, the promise of data-informed decisions is finally being realised in government. The coronavirus pandemic suddenly meant that actionable insight from data became a life-saving priority as the work of government was upended.

The increasing amount of data in government is also creating opportunities for departments and agencies to unlock insights at pace that can be used to help improve services, both for those within government and for the end-user.

Innovations during the pandemic include Public Health Wales using analytics to redeploy staff, and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy using data to provide oversight of government grants and financial management and controls.

This session will look at the success stories of the last 18 months, and consider where automated insights can go next in the civil service and wider public sector – and what it might unlock for civil servants. It will also look at the development of cross-government rules for automated decision making, and consider what needs to be done to unlock progress.

  • How can departments unlock insight from data?
  • How quickly can departments adopt more automated practice with their data?
  • What are the barriers to unlocking data insights?
