DFID should have greater oversight of all aid spending to help other departments meet the high standards it sets - Save the Children
Save the Children respond to the International Development Committee report on ODA.
UK aid works best for the world’s poorest people and for British taxpayers when it is rigorously focussed on the alleviation of poverty. In June the International Development Committee made welcome recommendations to ensure that all Government departments improved their standards, so it is very disappointing that the Government will not adopt them.
The Department for International Development (DFID) is a world leader in delivering high-quality aid. But as the proportion spent by other departments has increased, the proportion targeted at the children, countries and sectors that need it most has declined. DFID should have greater oversight of all aid spending to help other departments meet the high standards it sets. The level of aid spent by each department should depend on its success in meeting these standards.
