Alzheimer’s Society comments on new research by the Institute for Fiscal Studies has found that even if council tax goes up by 4%, demand for services will outstrip available cash if Conservatives win the election.

Sally Copley, Director of Policy and Campaigns at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “The social care crisis is a dementia crisis. Local authorities are stuck between a rock and a hard place, as social care funding has been stripped to the bone.

“Central government has washed its hands of social care for too long, leaving cash strapped councils to pick up the pieces and people with dementia battling to access failing services. Too often we hear of families stretched to breaking point by the struggle to get the care they need. Social care in the UK needs urgent overhaul, so no family has to fight this unfair and unfit system.

“With a General Election underway, all parties need to commit to radical reform in the longer term and immediate investment that ensures all people with dementia and their families have access to good quality care that is free at the point of use, just like the NHS, schools or any other public service. Social care should be available to all who need it, not just those who can afford it.”
