CMI comment on the Employment Bill

We know there are more than 2.4 million 'accidental managers' who struggle to manage and lead because they have been promoted without any coaching, writes CMI. 

We are pleased to see the Government committing to create a level playing field between full-time, part-time, contract, freelance and zero-hours contract staff. Ensuring that all workers can benefit from flexible working practices is an important step in improving the quality of work. However, enabling flexible working is just one element of the good work agenda and we can achieve much more if we focus on the broader aim of professionalising management and leadership roles to ensure all managers and leaders are upskilled in the best management practice, which includes flexible working.

At CMI we know there are more than 2.4 million 'accidental managers' who struggle to manage and lead because they have been promoted without any coaching or support from their employer. Good management and leadership is essential to employee engagement, performance and effecting positive change at work. Government should commit to improving management skills by championing standards such as Chartered Manager, which prove practical competence and enhance an individual's management accountability.
