Queen reflects on ‘sombre national mood’ on official birthday

1 min read

The Queen has said it is "difficult to escape a very sombre national mood" on her official birthday, after the UK was rocked by tragedies in Manchester and London.

In a statement issued on her official birthday, the Queen added: "Put to the test, the United Kingdom has been resolute in the face of adversity."

Her Majesty praised the community spirit that emerged after the attacks.

“During recent visits to Manchester and London, I have been profoundly struck by the immediate inclination of people throughout the country to offer comfort and support to those in desperate need.”

The Queen’s statement was in stark contrast to Theresa May’s response to the tragedy, which has been widely criticised for lacking empathy.

The number of those killed by the Grenfell Tower tragedy has been slowly rising. There have been 30 confirmed deaths, with the number expected to rise as more bodies are recovered from the building.
