Government 'reviewing car hire rules' after Barcelona attack

John Ashmore

1 min read

The Government is examining proposals for stricter checks on car and van hire in the wake of this week's terror attack in Barcelona.

It follows a spate of attacks in which attackers have turned a vehicle into a weapon by mowing into crowds of pedestrians.

Ministers are looking at whether rental companies could cross-reference customers' details with police criminal watch lists, the Sunday Telegraph reports.

Renters may also be asked to provide extra information about themselves in a bid to tighten up security around vehicle hire.

Government officials have already held discussions with the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) about possible changes.

Tirector of external relations at BVRLA, Toby Poston, told the Sunday Telegraph: “The industry is looking at ways to share data with the authorities in as real time as possible so it can be cross-referenced with counter-terrorism watch lists.”
