Filtons first sponsored degree class pass with flying colours

The first ever group of apprentices to embark on a landmark sponsored degree scheme at Airbus in Filton have celebrated their graduation at a ceremony in Bristol Cathedral.

After just over three years of academic study mixed with practical on-the-job training, the apprentices have collected their BEng degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the University of West of England and will go on to Engineering roles within the leading aircraft manufacturer.

Tony Rooke, Early Careers Manager for Airbus in Filton said: “The Undergraduate Apprenticeship programme is hugely challenging and it is a great achievement for these apprentices to do a job and successfully gain a degree in just three years.

“They have taken some giant steps at the start of their careers in aerospace.”

Apprentice Peter Short, aged 21 from Downend, Bristol said: “I really loved aerospace and considered and apprenticeship instead of going to University, so I was really interested when I found Airbus could give me the best of both worlds.

“I’ve always been interested in engineering, starting with building ‘KNEX’ models and then moving on to bigger toys such as cars and bikes - and now apparently aircraft!”

Airbus introduced the Undergraduate Apprenticeship programme in Filton in 2012 and it is believed to have been the first scheme of its type to be run in England.

In addition to the Engineering Undergraduate Apprenticeship, Airbus also offers apprenticeships for a range of career paths, including higher apprenticeships for those looking to go into supply chain roles, and craft programmes aimed at those looking to become qualified aircraft fitters.

More information on Airbus Apprenticeships can be found on the Airbus Group website.
