Government announces £40m investment in Dementia Research
The Government has today (Monday 12 March) announced a £40 million investment in the UK Dementia Research Institute (DRI).
This gives the DRI a total budget of £290m - £190m from the Medical Research Council, £50m from Alzheimer’s Society and £50m from Alzheimer’s Research UK.
The new funding from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy will help build a new DRI Hub at University College London, which is due to open in 2023.
Jeremy Hughes, Chief Executive at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “With no new treatments in 15 years, the pressure is on to find ways to help the 850,000 people in the UK currently living with dementia. The UK is a global leader in dementia research – but greater investment is desperately needed.
“This £40m will enable a cutting-edge hub for the UK Dementia Research Institute, so that we can attract world-class researchers and speed up the search for a cure. It’s great to see the Government uniting with us and showing its commitment to double dementia research funding by 2025.”
