The MacLeod Group, a family business based in Lochgilphead, Argyll comprising construction, property development, manufacturing and retail activities is set for further growth after agreeing a £5million finance package from Santander Corporate Commercial. The finance supports the completion of major local projects.

M K MacLeod Limited was established in 1975 by twin brothers Murdo and Kenny MacLeod and since then the group has grown to become the largest private sector employer in the area, employing around 200 staff and supporting a similar number of subcontractors. After starting life as general builders the business has diversified into timber frame and window manufacturing, landlords and property developers. Now, from their headquarters in Lochgilphead, they operate throughout Argyll from Oban to Campbeltown including the Inner Hebridean Islands. The group also operate two quarries and a petrol filling station.

The business undertakes major works for local authorities and housing associations including a number of key local projects such as the construction of the Atlantic Islands Centre, a community and cultural heritage hub on the Isle of Luing; the building of 32 new housing units in Campbeltown for the Argyll Community Housing association; the installation of a biomass system at Islay High School and Bowmore Primary School on the Isle of Islay. The site in Campbeltown was recently opened by the First Minister, Alex Salmond. The group also develops its own substantial landbank and supplies and erects house kits on its clients' sites.

Murdo MacLeod, Joint Founder of MacLeod Construction, said: “My brother and I grew up in Lochgilphead and are proud that we have built our business here and can support the local community with important projects at competitive prices. We are delighted to have a new partner to continue growing our business in this area.”

Deborah Gallacher, Relationship Director for Santander Corporate Commercial, said: “We are delighted to be able support this local business and employer. The MacLeod family is well known and respected in the local area and its surroundings and have built up a strong business with a sound reputation among both the public and private sectors.”

Murdo and Kenny are heavily involved in the local community. Murdo is chair of the Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust for Argyll the Islands and received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion in 2010, for playing an outstanding role in promoting enterprise skills and attitudes. Kenny is the Chair of the Argyll Training Group and is on the Board of the Argyll College UHI, helping to train the next generation of construction tradesmen.
