‘Putting Finance into Politics’ is the theme for this year’s International Public Sector conference, organised by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).

Simon Hamilton, Northern Ireland’s minister of finance; and Dr Lim Mah Hui, former professor and international banker and author of the controversial book ‘Nowhere to hide’; are among senior finance professionals from around the world at this year’s International Public Sector Conference by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).

They are being brought together to talk about finance in the political spectrum, on Thursday 4 December at the Inmarsat Centre, London.
Simon Hamilton will be giving a keynote speech about managing the politics of finance; and Dr Lim Mah Hui will be talking about the causes and consequences of inequality and the financial crisis.

Finance professionals from as far away as Australia and Sri Lanka will also be discussing how to achieve sound financial management and sustainable public finances when so much of the focus is on the short-term political cycle, through the following topics:

• Financial reporting and its impact on decision-making
• Holding government to account
• New reporting developments i.e. integrated reporting

Gillian Fawcett, ACCA’s head of public sector, said: “In our sixth International Public Sector Conference, we will explore what contribution financial accounting and reporting can make to effective decision-making, whether governments can be effectively held to account and whether the drive to deliver efficiencies is compromising ethical standards.

“This is a timely conference on how financial reporting and auditing are developing to improve decision-making, accountability and transparency for public spending.”

A live QA session is also being held on the @ACCANews Twitterfeed on Tuesday 25 November, 1pm-2pm GMT, with panellist Dr Danny Chow, lecturer in accounting at Durham Business School. It gives followers the chance to ask him about public sector accounting and governance.
