Mott MacDonald has been appointed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to provide technical and strategic advice on a public-private partnership (PPP) project to improve the waste management system in Curitiba, Brazil.

The appointment is financed by the country’s Private Sector Participation (PSP) programme.

Curitiba is the capital and largest municipality of the Brazilian state of Paraná, with a land area of 430 sq km and an estimated population of 1.75 million. While it is considered to be amongst the most prosperous cities in the country, the city is under pressure to develop a financially and commercially sound waste management solution that is both environmentally and socially sustainable.

Mott MacDonald’s will support the PSP partners and municipality to procure a private sector partner who will design, build, finance and operate a new waste collection, transport and disposal service. The consultancy’s services are expected to be delivered across the four main phases of project feasibility and procurement until the end of 2016.

Russell Dallas, Mott MacDonald’s project director, said: “With increasing infrastructure opportunities in Brazil and South America, the profile of this role is an important stepping stone in further establishing Mott MacDonald as a leading provider of transaction advisory services across the region. We will bring PPP procurement, transaction and strategic advisory, waste management and socio-environmental expertise to this scheme, complemented by our local commercial awareness and understanding of the Brazilian regulatory context.”

“It will be pleasing to see a new solution emerge in Curitiba, which is a progressive municipality that clearly shares our vision of a more sustainable, low carbon society based on ingenious and innovative solutions,” Russell added.
