NAS: Government 'can’t afford to miss this opportunity' to boost disabled workforce

National Autistic Society

Following an announcement today that the Government is launching a new drive to boost the chances of disabled people finding work, Tom Madders, Head of Campaigns at The National Autistic Society, said:

“Just 15% of adults with autism are in full-time employment. This figure is unacceptable, when the vast majority with the condition want to work. In these challenging economic times, we can’t afford to let the skills and talents of people with autism go to waste, but currently too many people struggle due to inadequate support and misunderstandings related to their condition.

“The Government is making all the right noises at its conference today by saying it will do more to encourage and support employers, but to deliver real change its campaign must take into account the benefits people with all disabilities can bring to the workplace, whether they have physical or “hidden” conditions like autism.

“The government has the chance to transform thousands of lives and bring significant economic benefits to the country; we can’t afford to miss this opportunity.”
