Response to Ian Lucas article on spinal cord injury care
In response to an article written by Ian Lucas MP for PoliticsHome, calling for the Government to end postcode lottery care for people with spinal cord injuries, the charity Spinal Research released this comment:
"Spinal Research fully supports the agenda set forth by Mr Ian Lucas. People with SCI deserve optimum care and rehabilitation throughout their lives for numerous reasons. We know that as paralysis become more chronic there is an accelerated ageing process detrimentally affecting the physiology of people. On-going review of need and optimal standards of care are required in order to mitigate these effects, which can in themselves adversely affect function, integration, and participation."
"Whilst a small incremental increase in function in an individual suffering SCI can mean profound changes to their quality of life (e.g. increased muscle strength in the trunk, improved dexterity in the hand), it is equally true and unimaginably distressing when a small degree of function is lost, particularly if this could have been avoided. The upmost vigilance in care throughout life is needed if we are to guard against this."
