Too many struggling with essential household costs

Commenting on new research showing some 500,000 emergency food parcels were distributed at food banks in the six months to September, charity Turn2us said:

"It’s clear that too many people are struggling with essential household costs and this increased use of foodbanks confirms the extent of the problem. It is welcome news that food bank users will now have access to additional support as our own experience tells us that heating costs are also a major worry for those struggling financially. Research released by us yesterday as part of our No Cold Homes campaign* revealed that of those struggling with heating costs, 33% have skipped meals and 21% have experienced stress or mental health problems.

It is clear from the stories we hear from the people we help that when someone is struggling in one area they are likely to be struggling in other areas too. That is why we welcome any initiative that seeks to bring together the support on offer from both charities and the government. No one should have to live in a cold home and no one should have to survive on an empty stomach, but only through reaching out and supporting the most vulnerable in society can we make a meaningful difference."
