Our Standards

Driving standards of education and professional practice

BANT is a professional organisation for practitioners of nutrition and lifestyle medicine.

BANT members are required to be registered either with Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) or be statutorily regulated. CNHC holds a register accredited by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA), an independent body accountable to the UK Parliament.

Only Registered Nutritional Therapy Practitioners and Registered Dietitians are trained and qualified in clinical practice to meet national standards and work in a one-to-one setting.

Registered Nutritionists have met training and qualification standards and work with groups, and wider industry, academia and non-clinical settings.

BANT members are required to meet Continuing Professional Development (CPD) standards.

BANT members work in one-to-one clinical practice, with groups, and in wider industry and academia using the most up-to-date nutrition science.

Development of NOS and the Core Curriculum

National Occupational Standards (NOS) for nutritional therapy were first set in 2004 under the guidance of Skills for Health, the government-appointed skills council for healthcare. Skills for Health was developed in 2002 as the Sector Skills Council for Health in the UK and informed policy and standards on health, education and aims to increase the quality of healthcare, patient safety and productivity.

The NOS remain the basis for assessing the competency and skills of Registered Nutritional Therapy Practitioners in clinical practice and form the foundation of clinical training. The Core Curriculum sets out the underpinning evidence-based knowledge required by Registered Nutritional Therapy Practitioners, and the broader skills required to work in the wider field of nutrition. The Core Curriculum is regularly updated.
