Liam Fox urges Brits: Tell your MP not to betray you on Brexit

Brits should tell their MPs not to “betray” them over Brexit by voting down the deal Theresa May clinched with Brussels, Cabinet minister Liam Fox said today.

The International Trade Secretary said those who wanted to ensure Brexit happens and those who want to avoid a no-deal departure from the EU should “contact their members of parliament”.

It comes as Theresa May faces a humiliating defeat when she puts her Brexit blueprint to MPs in less than two weeks.

More than 100 Tory MPs have condemned the agreement while every opposition party – including the DUP which props up her minority government – has vowed to reject it at the so-called ‘meaningful vote’ in the Commons.

The Prime Minister has launched a nationwide campaign to sell her deal to the public in the hope it will pile pressure on parliamentarians to rethink their opposition to her plans.

Dr Fox upped the ante during a visit to Bristol today by urging members of the public to lobby their constituency MPs directly before the Commons showdown on 11 December.

He told Sky News: “Those who are watching your programme across the country might want to contact their members of parliament and tell them that they don’t want to see either no Brexit - because that’s a betrayal of the voters in the referendum - or no deal because of the potential disruption that would bring.”

He added that he was giving his “unequivocal” backing to the deal – despite sounding lukewarm on some of the details in broadcast interviews this morning.

Dr Fox made the Comments as Theresa May refused to rule out holding a second Commons vote on her deal if MPs reject it the first time.

Meanwhile, MPs from across the political divide have been plotting how they can use parliamentary process to vote down the deal but stop a no-deal Brexit – with one proposal from a group of select committee chairs winning the support of Labour.
