Nick Clegg suggests UK could stay in EU as elderly Brexit voters are dying

Nick Clegg today suggested a re-run of the EU referendum could deliver a Remain vote since old people who backed Brexit are dying out.

The Liberal Democrat ex-leader said the “high point” of support for quitting the EU had “already passed”.

Some 61% of over-65s backed Brexit at the referendum last year, while 75% of 18 to 24-year-olds voted for Remain.

Mr Clegg fought to stay in the EU during the campaign and has continued to push for a second referendum on the final Brexit deal.

Today he made a coded link to life insurance calculations as he argued a re-run of the vote would produce a different result.

"How can I put this politely? Actuarially I suspect that the high point of the Brexit vote has already passed,” he told the BBC’s Andrew Marr show.

“Crucially, young people who have to live with the consequences of that referendum vote and these botched negations want something different.”

Asked if he meant Brexit voters were dying out, he added: "If you look at the demography – the oldest voters voted for Brexit in the largest numbers, the youngest voters did the opposite."

And in a shot at Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, he declared: "You can't end austerity unless you stop Brexit."
