Jacob Rees-Mogg wins seat on powerful Brexit committee but Anna Soubry misses out

Arch-Eurosceptic MP Jacob Rees-Mogg has been elected to serve on the Brexit Select Committee, but outspoken Remain campaigner Anna Soubry has lost out.
The two Conservative backbenchers were vying for places on the powerful committee, which will scrutinise the Government's Brexit strategy, after it was shaken-up following the recent snap general election.
Mr Rees-Mogg has seen a surge in popularity over the summer with some tipping him as a possible future Conservative leader.
But the devout Catholic sparked outrage yesterday when he said he was against abortion even in cases of rape or incest.
He told PoliticsHome: "I am pleased to have been elected to the Brexit Select Committee which will have an important scrutiny role in the next eighteen months."
Ms Soubry meanwhile has been a thorn in the Government’s side throughout the Brexit process in her campaign against a so-called hard Brexit.
Ahead of the select committee elections she said: “It’s important the Conservative MPs on this very important Select Committee represent the various views in the party on Brexit.”
Other prominent MPs newly elected to the committee were former minister Stephen Crabb, who supported Remain at the referendum, and backbencher Peter Bone, who backed Leave.
