Nuclear Industry Association

Responding to an article on 'Taxpayer liability for safety at the Wylfa Nuclear power project' Tom Greatrex, chief executive of the UK Nuclear Industry Association, said:

“It is incorrect to say the European Pressure Reactor (EPR) is unproven, when in reality the development in Taishan reached criticality in June this year. In addition, the industry has a long-term waste disposal solution, with BEIS and the NDA making rapid progress on planning for the Geological Disposal Facility. All new nuclear sites are obligated to make provision for their eventual decommissioning.

“We recognise renewables will play an important role in meeting our decarbonisation targets, but their intermittent generation is a valid cause for concern. While we have seen an unusual abundance of sun in recent weeks, there has been very little wind – with offshore wind producing just 1.3% of our electricity generation last week. On the other hand, nuclear can be relied on to provide low carbon energy regardless of the weather.”

This statement is in response to this article by the SNP Spokesperson for Energy, Alan Brown MP
