WATCH Tory ex-minister: Damian Green would have been Minister for Toilets under Margaret Thatcher
Damian Green would have been minister for toilets under Margaret Thatcher and will not be “missed for a millisecond” if he quits over an ongoing porn scandal, a top Conservative has said.
David Mellor said the de-facto deputy prime minister should resign to clear his name after ex-police officers said they found a mammoth stash of explicit images on an old work laptop.
A Cabinet Office probe into the claims is expected for publication within days. It is also considering claims Mr Green made inappropriate sexual advances towards a woman thirty years his junior.
Mr Green denies all the allegations and has so far refused to quit despite apparent calls to do so from figures at the very top of Government.
But former Treasury and home affairs minister Mr Mellor told GMB today: “Damian Green should have said, ‘I will resign to clear my name’ and he would have had lots of sympathy.
“Damian Green is the sort of guy who under Mrs Thatcher would have been the minister of state for latrines and would have lived in total obscurity.
“Instead of which he becomes Deputy Prime Minister, he rises without trace. He would not be missed for a millisecond if he left government. It would be better if he did.”
It emerged today that Mr Green has provided evidence to the Cabinet Office probe to prove that that porn can be present on computers without being downloaded or watched.
Meanwhile, Met Police boss Cressida Dick condemned the two former officers who said they found porn on a work laptop owned by Mr Green during a Home Office leaks probe in 2008.
It emerged at the weekend they kept files they were told to delete because they were concerned that the evidence could be lost.
“All police officers know very well that they have a duty of confidentiality, a duty to protect personal information,” she told the BBC.
“That duty in my view clearly endures after you leave the service.
“And so it is my view that what they have done – based on my understanding of what they are saying what they have done - is wrong and I condemn it.”
