Ex-MP Jim Sheridan has Labour party suspension lifted following anti-semitism probe

2 min read

Former MP Jim Sheridan has been reinstated to the Labour party following an investigation into claims he made anti-semitic comments on social media.

Jeremy Corbyn supporter Mr Sheridan was suspended last August over a post on his Facebook page - which has now been deleted, saying he had lost "respect" for Jewish people in the wake of the party's long-running anti-semitism row.

He said: "For almost all my adult life I have had the utmost respect and empathy for the Jewish community and their historic suffering.

"No longer due to what they and their Blairite plotters are doing to my party and the long suffering people of Britain who need a radical Labour government."

But it emerged on Friday night that following an investigation, the former Paisley and Renfrewshire MP had had his suspension lifted

In a statement, Mr Sheridan said: "Whilst I am delighted with this decision, I remain of the view that my accusers were misguided and overreacted to what was intended to highlight my personal frustration and criticism of those intent on undermining our leadership in Scotland and the UK.

"I would also like to reiterate my sincere apologies to the Jewish community whose historic struggle I have supported all my political life."

A Labour spokesperson said: "The Labour Party takes all complaints of anti-Semitism extremely seriously and we are committed to challenging and campaigning against it in all its forms.

"All complaints about anti-Semitism are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures and any appropriate disciplinary action is taken."
