Today’s figures underscore the need for concerted action in the form of a national bus strategy to support an industry which plays a vital role in the economy  and society.

The affordable, inclusive and accessible transport provided by buses form an integral part of tackling challenges such as loneliness, obesity, air pollution, social exclusion and sustainable growth.

“Whilst the national picture is challenging, Go-Ahead is achieving growth in some cities through partnership working with local authorities to prioritise bus travel. Since 2011, bus usage has risen by 8.3% in Brighton, 18.8% in Bournemouth/Poole and 25.8% in Southampton.

We must put bus at the heart of planning for schools, hospitals, housing, town centres and social services. A national bus strategy is required to enable bus to play its full role in building a thriving society.”
