GMB, the union for NHS staff, demands the Government marks International Nurses Day by ending the ‘cruel’ public sector pay cap.
Since the cap was introduced in 2010, GMB analysis shows the average nurse has lost £14,500 from their wages – more than £3,000 a year.
The Conservatives have pledged to keep the 1% cap in place until at least 2020 – enforcing deeper pay cuts on nurses as inflation rises.
By 2020, the average nurse will have had £18,200 pinched from their wages by the Tories.
GMB has launched an End the Public Sector Pay Pinch campaign, calling on the Government to end the cap.
Rehana Azam, GMB National Secretary, said:
“Today is Florence Nightingale’s birthday - a day when people all over the world honour the amazing, selfless work our nurses do.
“The NHS is taking a real pounding – and the Government seems to think its staff can take the strain – carrying on doing more and more for less.
“We call on Jeremy Hunt to stop punishing the nurses we all depend on – end this cruel pay cap once and for all.”
