Access to Work funding must not be missed opportunity
National Autistic Society
Responding to today’s announcement that extra funding will be committed to the Access to Work scheme, Sarah Lambert, Head of Policy at The National Autistic Society, said:
“The potential benefits of this cash boost won’t be fully realised unless Access to Work assessors have a proper understanding of autism. It’s a complex disability and without the right training, assessors won’t be able to identify the specific types of support that would help someone with autism in the workplace.
“It’s equally vital that both employers and people with autism and other disabilities are made aware of the system and know that they are entitled to extra assistance if they need it.
"This extra funding could help the thousands of disabled people across the country who want to work but currently don’t have the support they need to access employment. It’s vital this opportunity isn’t missed.”
