Britons will spend an average of £24 on ‘Secret Santa’ gifts this year - but will give more to charity

A poll by ComRes, conducted on behalf of UK poverty charity Turn2us, has shown that as a nation we will spend on average 23.62 on Secret Santa gifts this Christmas.

The results also reveal that men will spend three times more than women (£40 versus £13) and that it is those aged 25-34 that give the most, with an average of £52 in total spend.

The figures are released as part of the Turn2us No Cold Homes campaign, which is raising money to support those struggling to keep their home warm this winter. As part of the campaign the charity has asked celebrities to auction their favourite winter wear, and has received donations from celebrities including Benedict Cumberbatch, Ed Sheeran, Dame Helen Mirren, Olly Murs and Sir Chris Hoy.

The new figures also reveal that nearly a quarter (24%) of GB adults are planning on donating to charity this Christmas, with an average total donation of £35.13. Those aged over 65 are the most likely to donate (32%) as well as those living in Scotland (28%) and the East Midlands (29%).

Simon Hopkins, Chief Executive of Turn2us, said: “Christmas is an important time for many and an especially crucial time for charities that rely on those who support good causes. Our No Cold Homes campaign, which is raising money to help those struggling to heat their home this winter, is just one way that people can help others this Christmas. A third of those struggling financially won’t speak to friends or family about their situation, which is why the role of charities in raising awareness is so important.”

The charity launched its biggest ever celebrity clothes auction last week. An Armani cardigan from Benedict Cumberbatch, a trademark trilby from singing sensation Olly Murs, and a signed Team GB cycling top from Sir Chris Hoy are amongst the dozens of items being auctioned in support of the campaign.

The Turn2us celebrity clothes auction runs until 9 December. For more information, please visit www.turn2us.org.uk/NoColdHomes.
