CMI call for mandatory reporting on disability

To be more responsive to the needs of disabled customers, businesses need to employ more disabled people, says CMI.

The best businesses reflect the communities and consumers they serve.

To be more responsive to the needs of disabled customers, businesses need to employ more disabled people. This needs to be at every level in the organisation - from the shop or factory floor, to the board room.

CMI research shows that many companies are failing when it comes to disabled people. In fact, our research with a number of FTSE100 companies showed that only around half collected data on whether employees had a disability and none had targets for increasing the representation or progression of disabled people.

As we've seen in other areas, transparency is key to shifting behaviours. The recent Government initiative to encourage employers to report publicly on the number of disabled people they employ is a good first step - but not sufficient. This is why CMI wants to see mandatory reporting on disability, along the same lines as gender pay reporting. Until then, most businesses will continue to struggle to really understand the needs of disabled consumers.
