In a statement this morning, Prime Minister Theresa May announced that a General Election will be held on 8 June 2017. Here is CPRE's response.

This General Election presents all parties with an opportunity to demonstrate their strong commitment a thriving natural environment. Our countryside plays a vital role in coping with climate change, providing food and energy, and a home for nature. CPRE looks forward to seeing strong manifesto commitments in support of this valued public resource.

Our countryside is facing unprecedented pressures. Unrestrained, short-term economic growth should not be at the expense of natural assets vital to our wellbeing. We need to fix a broken planning system that rewards speculative development instead of providing much needed affordable housing, a resilient farming sector delivering more public benefit, and further investment in sustainable transport instead of more roadbuilding.
