Diabetes prevention as important as treatment

Responding to an article written by Keith Vaz MP on the National Diabetes Prevention Programme, Slimming World's Head of PR and Public Affairs, Jenny Caven said:

“Like Keith Vaz we are delighted that prevention of diabetes is being taken as seriously as treatment with the announcement of a National Diabetes Prevention Programme by Simon Stevens. Each week at Slimming World groups across the country we help 800,000 members navigate towards making healthier lifestyle choices. A number of members are already being treated for diabetes and they find that when losing weight following a safe healthy eating plan and becoming more active their condition improves significantly.  In an online survey of members with Type 2 diabetes, 90% reported improvements in glucose control and 38% reported that they have stopped or reduced their medication."

"On the point of prevention however, a more significant number of members who struggle with their weight are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and for them a safe, community based weight management programme which supports them to develop long term new healthy eating and increased activity habits can prevent them from succumbing to diabetes at all.”
