Clive Jones CBE, the Chair of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), will provide an exclusive look at emergency response organisation at a special event at London Metropolitan University on 24 September 2015.

The talk, which will be followed by a QA session, is open to University staff, students, alumni as well as members of the public.

DEC is a unique organisation, a collective of thirteen independent aid agencies and independent trustees, which springs into action at times of humanitarian crisis.

DEC has raised more than £75 million following the recent earthquake in Nepal, £37 million to stop the spread of Ebola and £97 million to mitigate the effects of the hurricane that swept through the Philippines in its latest appeals.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees with DEC since 2011, Jones also has a close relationship to the London University as chair of London Met’s Board of Governors since 2010.

Originally from Wales, Jones has had an incredible career, beginning his working life as a newspaper journalist. He worked in print for eight years before joining the newsdesk at Yorkshire television in 1978 starting his 36 year career in broadcast journalism.

Jones has been Managing Director of the ITV Network, CEO of Carlton Television, Managing Director of Central Television and Managing Director of the London News Network. Until 2007 Clive was the Chief Executive of ITV News and Regions and the longest serving senior executive in ITV. He is now deputy chairman of the ITV Pension Fund, which has £3.5 billion under management and chairs the audit committee.

Jones has put his years of expertise to good use, supporting many organisations who develop careers through education. He was the chair of Skillset, the sector skills council for television, film, publishing and new media, for eight years and from 2007 to 2011 chaired Mediabox, a fund to support 13-19 year olds to create their own media projects.

As well as helping to develop the media industry through education Jones founded and chaired the ground-breaking Cultural Diversity Network for two years and sits on the board of the Runnymede Trust, the UK’s leading independent race equality think tank. He currently sits on the board of the Young Vic and the Thompson Foundation.

In 2007 Clive received the Gold Medal by the Royal Television Society and in the same year was awarded a CBE for his services to broadcasting.

Since his appointment with as Chairman of the Board of Trustees with DEC in 2011 Clive has been leading the board who are responsible for the charity’s direction, strategic goals, financial stability and delivering the charitable outcomes that have been set up.

In this exclusive lecture Jones will provide an insight into how the DEC works and how it raises so much money for people in need.
