Seven new ryegrass varieties and a red clover have been added to the 2014 Recommended Grass and Clover Lists (RGCL), which have just been published.

The lists, which include only grasses and clovers that have undergone at least six years of independent testing, offer grassland farmers an invaluable resource, enabling them to select varieties that will perform well in a particular system.

“All of the varieties that make the RGCL have been rigorously tested for factors such as yield, feed quality, disease, and persistence,” said EBLEX livestock scientist Dr Liz Genever.

“The lists give details on the performance and characteristics of each variety, helping producers make informed decisions about which one best meets their needs.

“Selecting the appropriate variety to suit their purpose, whether that is to improve first cut conservation or grazing mid-season growth, will help producers maximise the productivity of their grassland.”

The 2014 RGCL handbook, together with the full lists for merchants, are now available to download at www.eblex.org.uk/returns and www.britishgrassland.com/rgcl. Hard copies of both booklets will be available from the EBLEX, DairyCo and BGS stand (stand 329) at Grassland and Muck at Stoneleigh Park on 21 and 22 May.
